coffee break with coast + copper

Updated: Apr 27, 2018

The first time I met Steven, half 1 of Coast + Copper, we were chatting about our favorite hometown burgers as we're both Kenosha, Wisc. natives. I soon found out that his Kenosha-based photography business has another half, and quite literally his other half, in Tori. Steven & Tori run Coast + Copper Photography - formally known as SR Photography. We all chatted over Kenosha coffee one day and here's what I heard:

How lucky are you and why?

Tori/ We are so fortunate to be able to share one of the most important days in a couples' life! It’s like we get a behind the scenes look on every wedding day, and it reminds us why we got married 8 years ago. It’s also great to have a career where we can, not only work with our spouse, but also involve our little guy. He comes on shoots with us and we’ve loved watching him actually become interested in using a real camera! He started with a wooden camera and now he’s even used a real film camera; winding it & everything - it’s adorable to see him want to be like us.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

Tori/ Is Beyoncé an option? Just kidding. Our future lifelong plans still include weddings! We have a vision of someday owning a wedding venue bed and breakfast type space. We love weddings and I feel like that would be the ultimate wedding career.

What does a husband & wife creative professional relationship look like?

Tori/ I feel like we’re always working together towards common goals so I think it keeps us close and strong as a couple. I will be honest, there are definitely times that I have tell Steve “no more business talk!” It’s usually around 10 pm or later and he’s just figured out some crazy new photography podcast and I’m exhausted from a day of toddler-wrangling.

What’s your karaoke song?

Tori/ We’re both a little too reserved for karaoke, but there was a time before we were married that I sang ‘When I’m 64’ by the Beatles. Steve totally fell in love that night.

What's your photography style?

Tori/ I would say our style is laid back and snuggly. Does that count? We don’t like to over direct, so we will set up a shot and see where the couple feels most comfortable and take it from there. Another thing is, we are shooting film now rather than digital! Steve learned film in high school and now that we’ve added it back in, it really feels like we’ve found our missing piece. It was the perfect addition to our company. Film has a different feel and I think that most people are drawn to it when they see side by side comparisons.

How do you take your coffee?

Steve/ Nitro coldbrew

Tori/ Anything iced with cream

How do you stay organized?

Tori/ We use a software called Sprout Studio where our clients all have their own portals for their galleries and shoots, and we have a calendar on there as well that we both have access to. I honestly get most work done during our little dude’s nap time!

Where is there light in your life?

Tori/ Great question! Easy answer: Jude. He is our reason for everything we do. He’s the silliest little guy & his energy is inspiring.

Why 'Coast and Copper’?

Tori/ I was born on the East Coast and I spent most summers on the West Coast so I’m just drawn to the word. Our studio is near the lakefront, too, so we thought the word was fitting. We started brainstorming some things that would be a good juxtaposition to the coast and we thought about 'copper.' We chose 'copper' because of the relationship between copper and costal regions. Copper weathers the storm and in doing so, it becomes more unique and in its patina state is still beautiful. Lasting relationships go through changes. I think anyone in a successful relationship knows that it’s not all sunshine and rainbows, and sometimes it’s the storms that help us grow and evolve.

What is your favorite wedding trend right now?

Tori/ We are loving current floral trends! We love the textures and depth that these succulent and eucalyptus bouquets & centerpieces have. And, of course ,we love the flower crowns.
