coffee break with chelsea matson photography

Amy Rizzuto Photography

Fate dealt me a sweet card when I met Chelsea. I was producing a wedding in Lake Geneva and she was the photographer. As soon as I saw her scrunchy, incredible laugh, I was hooked. We chatted throughout the wedding, in between shots, about work, babies and marriage.

Since that wedding, Chelsea and I have kept in touch on our journey through babies, big career moves, new houses and tough decisions. We've moved past being colleagues, guys. We're best friends! So, it's about time that I sat down with Chelsea for coffee (which we do weekly), and ask her some questions. Here's what I learned (all images from Chelsea Matson Photography):

How long have you been taking photos?

Forever! My first photography course was my senior year in high school. Before then, I had a big, bulky "pocket" digital camera with a maybe 1" screen that I brought everywhere with me.

And prior to that I was obsessed with always having a disposable camera to take photos of friends and random things. I remember bringing the film to the grocery store to send away to be developed! That being said I have been photographing professionally for about 5 years now.

Describe your photography style using three words:

Honest, joyful, artistic.

What’s your karaoke song?

Shambala! But you don't want to be present for that.

What Disney princess are you?

A mix of Pocahontas + Merida.

What's your favorite part of a wedding day?

This is so hard, I love the whole day, but especially when the couple is together, just loving life like they are in their own little bubble for a moment.

I also love the times after the ceremony or first look. Before these moments, the day is a little more high stress, with an overwhelming sense of relief and incredible joy that erupts once they are united – and everyone feels that!

How do you take your coffee?

Usually tea, but black when I need a pick-me-up.

What’s your favorite wedding cake flavor?

My mom made ours from a family recipe that she has always used for our birthday cakes. It is a vanilla sponge cake with chocolate buttercream icing - UNREAL.

How do you stay organized?

Lots of lists; Google calendar saves me, and HoneyBook

Where do you find inspiration?

In people's relationships, nature, the funny things little kids say, and learning more about people.

Where is there light in your life?

I get the most joy from my family and friends. Steve and August truly are just...I have no words, why am I tearing up? I love them so much! My sisters make me laugh until I am peeing my pants, and we are so lucky to have been welcomed into this Midwest community with open arms, and minds.

What is your favorite wedding trend right now?

I love the simpler gowns that I’ve been seeing; and earthy colors, florals & flexibility in wedding party wear. I’m also a huge fan of personalized ceremonies - couples allowed to hug the whole way though if they want, mixing it up, keeping it short and focusing on the joy and love they share. And I’m loving city hall weddings, elopements, and back yard weddings!
