choosing your wedding photographer: start here

Updated: Apr 27, 2018

Some of the most stunning and incredibly moving photos are shot by wedding photographers. We’ve all spent way longer than expected scrolling through wedding photos on Instagram. It’s easy to see the beauty in these pictures; but where do you possibly start when it comes to choosing your own wedding photographer?

I’m going to tell you where to start and you’re not going to like it. Budget! It’s not as fun as swiping through pretty photos, but it’s realistic. By starting with your wedding photography budget, you’re setting yourself up for success while researching vendors.

Next, you should decide on a wedding photography style. Unfortunately, this takes some research. Because there are a lot of wildly talented wedding photographers in Wisconsin (& beyond), they’ve done a great job of identifying with certain styles. It’s okay if you’re clueless about your photography style. Here’s a really helpful article that breaks down the main photo styles: photojournalistic, fine art, traditional, editorial & modern.

Then, decide on a few great contenders & set up interviews. Remember, these people will be very close to you throughout your entire wedding day. You have to vibe well!

In the interim, ask for examples of full wedding albums from previous couples. And even though they're gorgeous, the photographer's wedding blog posts online are just snippets of the entire day. You want to make sure you love it all.

And don't forget if you're having a hard time finding the right wedding photographer, don't hesitate to just reach out & ask them blunt questions. Photographers are looking for the right fit in their clients just as much as you are. Just aim for good vibes all around.
